Adams River Salmon Society

The organization's mission is to promote and support education, interpretation and conservation of the cultural and natural values of the Roderick Haig-Brown Park on the Adams River & to protect wild salmon.

The Adams River Salmon Society is run by a volunteer board of directors who are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. The primary focus of the Society is to help organize and run the Salute to the Sockeye held during the dominant run every four years. In addition, the Society helps to determine how best to utilize the proceeds from the Salutes, including the event admission revenue, to fulfill its mandate to encourage and facilitate the education and conservation of the natural and cultural resources of Roderick Haig-Brown Park. For example, funding for the interpretive signage throughout the Park came from the Salute proceeds, known as the Legacy Fund. Another project for the Society has been the restoration of the former overflow parking lot, which began with the planting of over 1,000 tree seedlings in the spring of 2010.

Salmon Come Home
October 22, 2017

Hoy Creek Hatchery, Coquitlam, British Columbia V3B 7N3

Our annual SALMON COME HOME event is usually held the third Sunday of every October, and is co-hosted with the City of Coquitlam Municipality, and celebrates the return of the salmon to Hoy Creek. The return is special because the salmon return to the creek where they were spawned, after living most of their adult lives at sea. They return solely to spawn and then die.

In 2017 the date is set for Sunday, October 22nd. The free family event runs from 11am through to 3pm at the Hoy Creek Hatchery as many participating community groups share educational information. The highlight is viewing the returning chum salmon, but there is also live salmon demonstrations; musical entertainment; habitat restoration (planting); interactive children’s activities; food, and educational exhibits. Approximately 2000 people came out in 2016 and there was a good show of chum salmon in the stream. Prime viewing is middle of October through early November.

Dress for the weather, as the event runs rain or shine! The Hoy Creek Hatchery is located on Hoy Creek Trail Linear Park, west of the City Centre Aquatic Complex at the corner of Pinetree and Guildford Way.
